Parking: The Seemingly Small Decision with HUGE Impact

Growing up, I spent 1 week each summer camping on an island in the middle of Lake George (in the Adirondack Mountains of New York). You had to take a boat to go camping there.

Logically, there were no cars for miles.

So when I started camping at traditional campgrounds as an adult, I felt like I was sleeping in a parking lot…

These vastly different camping experiences influenced our decision at Ferncrest to create a more serene environment by keeping cars separate from the lodging areas.

Having a separate parking area is not rocket science (or hard to do!)…but it turns out it’s rather novel and something that has become an important part of our glampground experience, and something that may be worth considering if you are charting plans for your own glampground.

The Benefits of a Designated Parking Area

Pros:

  • Peaceful Environment: Without cars parked next to tents, guests enjoy a quieter and more peaceful atmosphere.
  • Enhanced Safety: With fewer vehicles driving around, the glampground feels safer, especially for children.
  • Reduced Noise: Less vehicle traffic means a calmer and more relaxing experience.
  • Unique Experience: Using large, big-wheeled carts (like Gorilla Carts) to transport belongings adds to the unique, out-of-the-ordinary experience we aim to create.

Cons:

  • Convenience: Some guests may find it inconvenient to transport their belongings from the parking lot to their tent.
  • Accessibility: Ensuring accessibility for disabled guests requires thoughtful planning, including movable barriers and clear communication about accommodations.

Overcoming Challenges

To address the convenience issue, we provide Gorilla Carts, which have become a part of the Ferncrest experience. Guests often enjoy the novelty of loading up their cart and walking to their tent, adding to the sensory experience of glamping.

For accessibility, we have pathways that are passable by cars and allow those with limited mobility to use their vehicles to transport belongings. This setup also ensures that emergency vehicles can access the property if needed.

Creating Your Unique Glampground Experience

When planning your glampground, consider the following tips to enhance the guest experience:

  • Emphasize Peace and Safety: Design your glampground to minimize vehicle traffic near lodging areas.
  • Create Unique Touches: Think about how you can add unique elements, like transport carts, and landscape lighting that enhance the guest experience.
  • Plan for Accessibility: Ensure your glampground is accessible to all guests, with clear communication and accommodations for those with limited mobility.
  • Focus on the Experience: Remember, you’re offering an experience that is different from the everyday. Small inconveniences can be turned into memorable parts of the journey.  Strange to say…but when guests are glamping they are ok with a little “work”!

This message doesn’t just apply to parking!

By thoughtfully designing your glampground with these principles in mind, you can create a unique and memorable experience for your guests that sets your business apart.

Happy glamping!
