How Failure Fuels Success in the Glamping Industry

When Joanna and I started our first business—a clothing brand we believed would be a billion-dollar company—we never imagined it would fail after 12 years of hard work.

It had reached $20M in annual sales and sold products to millions of customers.

Needless to say, the pain of that failure was real, but it paved the way for everything we’ve built since, including our glampground Ferncrest.

After our clothing venture faltered, we bought a rundown motel that would eventually become The Rex Hotel.

We had no idea what we were in for. Septic systems failed. Toilets wouldn’t flush. At every turn, something broke. But each problem taught us something crucial and helped us create a better, more resilient business.

Then came Ferncrest.

We poured everything we had into building the perfect glampground. But again, challenges hit hard.

For instance, the first wood-fired hot tubs we bought didn’t last much more than 1 year. That mistake cost us thousands, but it led to designing custom stainless steel hot tubs that have since become a highlight of the guest experience.

Here’s why this matters for you right now.

The moment to plan for your 2025 glampground is right now. We’re approaching that critical window where every day counts. If you wait for the “perfect” time, you’ll find yourself stuck in place. And trust us—inaction is the real failure.

Take our journey with Ferncrest. We didn’t have all the answers when we started.

We simply took action.

We bought land, started building, learned from each mistake, and adjusted along the way. Every step moved us closer to success.

Here’s why action beats inaction, every single time:

  • Momentum builds success: Starting creates opportunities that standing still never will.
  • Learning happens on the go: We learned more from installing those faulty hot tubs than we ever would have from endless planning.
  • Failure teaches, inaction paralyzes: Every mistake can be fixed. But doing nothing guarantees you’ll never succeed.

2025 is just around the corner. If you’ve been dreaming of launching a glampground, now is the time to make your move. Whether it’s finding land, sketching designs, or just committing to your vision—taking action today is the only way to make next year your year.

Happy Glamping!
